Slow Down to Get Around Law Now in Effect
An expansion of the state law designed to protect roadside workers is now in effect in Pennsylvania.
Act 83 of 2018 adds trash haulers to the list of vehicles, including stationary tow trucks, mail delivery vans and other vehicles involved in performing a roadside service, to those for which a driver must slow down when passing.
Drivers are required to move at least one lane away when possible or slow down and be ready to stop if they cannot.
This law is in addition to the "Steer Clear" law requiring drivers to move over when approaching an emergency response scene.
February 5th Membership Meeting
Be sure to mark your calendars for February 5, 2019 which will be our first membership meeting of the new year. We will be installing our Officers and Directors and we will be having a very informative presentation by Zach Ambrose from the Pennsylvania Energy Efficient New Homes Program.
This spring, municipalities across Pennsylvania will begin enforcement of a new energy code. All homes with contracts signed or permit applications submitted on or after October 1, 2018 are subject to the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) - with some amendments.
Builders whose projects qualify for the Pennsylvania Energy Efficient New Homes Program, offered by FirstEnergy's Pennsylvania utilities (Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power and West Penn Power), are already well on their way to constructing homes that conform with the 2015 IECC requirements.
Come to the February 5th BBBA general membership meeting for a presentation on what's required by the new energy code. Learn how the Energy Efficient New Homes Program's financial incentives and technical assistance can support members building homes serviced by Penelec.
All attendees will be entered into a drawing to win a US Hotel Restaurant and Tavern gift certificate - use it to cover dinner costs for future meetings or for a great night out!

Remodeling market sending mixed signals as 2019 begins
Will 2019 be another banner year for remodeling and renovation, or will firms begin to experience a softening in demand? As the new year gets underway, the answer seems to be that it depends on which part of the market you are looking at. Early indicators point to ongoing demand but a decrease in the size and value of projects. Results from the just-released Q1 2019 Houzz Renovation Barometer show "a mixed degree of caution about market conditions among contractors, architects and designers," states Houzz principal economist Nino Sitchinava. Government shutdown derails real estate deals in rural communities
In small towns and rural communities where more borrowers are relying on mortgages backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the federal government shutdown has put the brakes on deals that might otherwise be headed for closing. Lindy Sgambati, an agent for Keller Williams in Westmoreland County, has two real estate transactions caught up in the ongoing animosity between the White House and Capitol Hill that has turned into the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
